Dog Obedience Training Basics
A well trained and socialized dog is a great companion for life and joy to live with. However, to have a well-trained and socialized dog, which you can take with you wherever you want, needs a lot of effort also from your side. Dogs learn through all their life, but it is important to start obedience training your dog when he is still a puppy as this makes everything easier.
A purpose of obedience training is to have a socialized dog who will behave properly with other people and animals in different situations. If you are a first time dog owner a good decision would be to take your dog to obedience training class where professional instructor will teach you important things you should know about dog behavior and about how to train your dog in most successful way. Dog obedience training sets of boundaries and rules for your dog in the family pack and helps preventing unwanted dog behavior such as barking, pulling on a leash, biting or chewing inappropriate objects. At least two basic things which your dog should know are coming when called and walking on a leash without pulling. To control your dog in every situation you and your dog should master those two important things. However, here are some general tips which will facilitate your dog obedience training: Do not punish your dog for bad behavior Reward your dog for good performance and do not punish your dog for not mastering commands when he is in training process. Positive reinforcement training technique creates stronger bond between you and your dog. Training should be based on reward and positive reinforcement as this works best and will motivate your dog to follow your commands. There are different types of reward such as giving food, play, petting and you can use the one that works best with your dog. If your dog behaves badly, you can use certain type of penalty such as ignoring him or not going for a walk. However, you should never use physical punishment or negative reinforcement techniques such as yelling, time out in the kennel, choke collars and electric shocks with your dog, as they reinforce fear and stress, and indirectly, as a consequence of fear may provoke aggression or unpredictable behavior. Bad behavior can be fixed by rewarding good behavior. Consistency and short daily obedience trainings Do not ask your dog to do something if he can avoid this action and do not beg your dog to do something you want. Give command once or twice, and not ten times. If your dog does not obey, correct the unwanted behavior. Be consistent and patient and follow the same rules all the time. Training lessons should be short and part of daily routine, for example 3 times per day for 5 minutes at a time will be enough, as dogs can lose concentration quickly. Training should be something that you and your dog both enjoy doing and it should not be done under pressure – training should be fun. Do not expect your dog will master new tricks and commands for the first time. Repeat lessons every day and take it slow, progress will be gradual and cannot happen overnight.
